Why pentatonic always works

Two notes a semitone apart grind against each other — that grind is most of what we call “wrong notes”. Toggle keys below and the red links mark every semitone clash in your selection. The major scale carries two built-in clashes (E–F and B–C). Remove one note from each pair and you get the pentatonic: the biggest possible selection with zero clashes — which is exactly why you can mash its notes freely and nothing sounds wrong.
