Before we use tones and semitones to build anything formal, it is worth naming two sounds you almost certainly already recognise. Press play below to hear C, E and G sounded together. That cluster has a bright, open, settled quality — it is called a "major" sound. Now play C E♭ G (lowering the middle note by one semitone). The character shifts noticeably — darker, more inward. That is a "minor" sound.

One semitone of difference in the middle note is all that separates major from minor — exactly the change you saw when we built major and minor triads. Having that sound in your ear makes everything that follows more meaningful.

A major key and its relative minor share exactly the same notes — only the home note changes. That shift is all that makes the difference between bright and shadowed.

Twelve key signatures, not twenty-four

Every minor key shares its key signature with a major key. They are paired — called "relatives". C major and A minor share the key signature of no sharps or flats. G major and E minor both have one sharp (F♯). This means there are only twelve distinct key signatures to learn, and each one covers both a major and a minor key.

To find the relative minor of any major key: count up to the sixth note of the major scale. The sixth note of C major is A, so A minor is the relative. The sixth note of G major is E, so E minor is the relative. Alternatively: the relative minor starts a minor third (three semitones) below the major tonic — both routes give the same answer.

Three minor scales

Why they are called relatives

The word "relative" is doing real work. A major key and its relative minor are built from exactly the same seven notes — only the note you treat as home moves, and that shift is what changes the character from bright to shadowed. Prove it to yourself:

Play C D E F G A B C using only white keys — that is C major, and it should sound bright and settled. Now play the same white keys but run A B C D E F G A, starting and ending on A. Identical notes, yet it sounds darker and more inward. That is A minor. Hearing the same notes change character purely because the home note moved is the fastest way to understand what "relative" really means.

That darker colour is everywhere once you listen for it — countless film themes and ballads slip into a minor key exactly when they want to sound wistful, tense or sad.

The harmonic minor raises the 7th degree — this creates the leading-tone pull (a semitone below the tonic) that natural minor lacks.

Three versions of a minor scale

Three versions of a minor scale

Unlike major scales, which have one fixed form, minor scales come in three versions. They are not three separate things to memorise — they are one natural minor scale with purposeful adjustments to the sixth and seventh notes.

Natural minor

The relative minor scale played straight, using only the notes from the shared key signature. A natural minor: A B C D E F G A. No adjustments.

Harmonic minor

The seventh note is raised by a semitone. In A minor, G becomes G♯. This creates a stronger pull back toward the tonic — the raised seventh "wants" to resolve upward to A. The raised seventh is written as an accidental in the music rather than in the key signature, because it only applies in this version.

Nothing to panic about. “Harmonic minor” is the ordinary minor scale with one note nudged up, so the ending pulls home harder. One note — that is the whole change.

Melodic minor

Both the sixth and seventh notes are raised going up (F♯ and G♯ in A minor), then returned to natural going down. The reason is purely practical: the gap between F natural and G♯ in the harmonic version is awkward to sing, so the sixth was raised to smooth the ascent. Going down, that pull toward the tonic matters less, so both notes revert.

One pattern

One pattern, three transformations

The fastest way to hold the three forms in your head is to see them not as three scales but as one scale with two optional adjustments. Take the natural minor as the base, then apply a transformation:

Natural = the base. A B C D E F G A. No changes.
Harmonic = base + raise the 7th. A B C D E F G♯ A.
Melodic = base + raise the 6th and 7th going up, both back to natural coming down.

Raising the seventh is what gives the harmonic minor its strong pull home. The seventh sits just a semitone below the tonic, and that small gap acts like a steep slope — the note leans hard toward the note above it, so the scale feels like it is being drawn back to its home note rather than simply arriving there.

Major scale: one pattern. Natural minor: one pattern. Harmonic minor: natural plus a raised 7th. Melodic minor: natural plus a raised 6th and 7th on the way up. Four ideas, each a small change to the one before — far lighter than four scales learned separately.

The relative relationship

The relative minor shares a key signature with its major partner. The relative minor tonic is the sixth degree of the major scale (three semitones below the major tonic). This halves the number of key signatures to learn.

Drill: convert at sight

For Grade 5 you need this conversion to be instant in both directions. Two reliable methods:

  • Major → relative minor: go down three semitones (or to the 6th degree). C→A, G→E, F→D, B♭→G.
  • Minor → relative major: go up three semitones (the 3rd degree of the minor). A→C, E→G, D→F.

The key signature never changes in the conversion — only which note you call home. Practise by naming the relative of each key around the circle until it needs no calculation.

Natural minor = pure (no alterations). Harmonic minor raises degree 7 (creates the leading-tone pull). Melodic minor raises 6 and 7 ascending, reverts descending.

The three forms — and when each appears

Natural minor: the key signature notes only. Used in melodic passages where the natural seventh does not create a sense of arrival — folk music, modal contexts.

Harmonic minor: seventh raised. Used when a composer wants the dominant chord (built on the fifth) to be a major chord, creating a stronger resolution to the tonic. The raised seventh also appears in the V–I cadence in minor keys.

Melodic minor: sixth and seventh raised ascending, lowered descending. The ascending form removes the augmented second (three semitones) that appears between the sixth and seventh of the harmonic minor — an interval awkward for singers and for smooth melodic lines. The descending form reverts because the pull toward the tonic is less critical going down.

The three forms as transformations of one base

Beneath the functional descriptions above sits a single compact structure. Treat the natural minor as the base and the other two as operations applied to it:

Melodic = base + raise 6th and 7th ascending; revert both descending.

The raised seventh is the operative move. It sits one semitone below the tonic, so the leading note leans hard upward into home.

Raising it is exactly what turns the dominant triad into a major chord, giving the minor-key perfect cadence its decisive pull.

The melodic minor's raised sixth is then a secondary correction — it only exists to smooth the awkward jump the raised seventh would otherwise create against the natural sixth.

! The structural view

One major pattern, one natural-minor pattern, and two transformations of the latter. Seeing the harmonic and melodic forms as edits to a single base — rather than as independent scales — is what collapses the apparent volume of minor-scale material into something small enough to reason about directly.
