Music runs on two independent systems — pitch (how high) and time (when notes fall and how long they last). We start with time: the simpler one, underneath everything you play.

How do you write down a sound?

Music is invisible. A sound happens, fills the air for a moment, and is gone.

Here is a tune you already know. Listen first — don't read anything yet.

Now imagine you had to write that down — on paper, with no recording — so a stranger could play it back exactly. What would you need to capture?

For most of history this was music's hardest problem. Tunes lived only in memory and in the ear, passed from player to player, slowly drifting out of shape.

You already hear the three things that matter. You can tell a high note from a low one; a long note from a short one; and when each note lands — its place among the others. Pitch, length, and timing: those are the building blocks.

How high, how long, and when

Every note answers just three questions:

How high is it? — its pitch.
How long does it last? — its duration, shown by the note’s shape.
When does it come, next to the others? — its placement in time.

The stave is a map

Over centuries, Western music settled on one elegant solution: a grid with two directions, read like a map.

bar line 𝄞 higher pitch time — later to the right

Up the page = pitch. The higher a note sits, the higher it sounds — the vertical axis.

Across the page = when it is played. The further right a note sits, the later it sounds. Its position is really the time used up by everything before it — the horizontal axis.

The note’s shape = how long. Its design — filled or open head, stem, tails — tells you its duration. That is what most of this section is about.

Bar lines grid the time axis. Just as the stave lines help your eye place a note’s height, bar lines split the horizontal axis into equal groups of beats — so you can see exactly when each note falls. How many beats per group is set by the time signature.

That is the whole secret of the stave: one picture holding pitch and time — pitch up the page, time across it, each note’s length written into its shape, and bar lines gridding the time axis just as the stave lines grid pitch. Everything else is detail layered on top.

Setting pitch aside for now

One axis at a time

Three things at once is a lot to learn. So we set pitch aside and study time first — both of its parts: how long each note lasts, and where it falls.

For the rest of this section, pitch is parked. We will master note values (how long each note lasts) and beats, bars and subdivision (where each note falls) on a single line — then bring pitch back when you read the full stave.

To focus on time alone, we flatten the stave to a single line. The notes no longer tell us how high — only how long each one lasts (its shape) and when it falls (its placement).

This is not a shortcut we invented — it is real notation. Instruments with no pitch, like a snare drum or hand claps, are written exactly this way: one line, rhythm only.

Note values — the doubling system

Note lengths are not a list of separate facts. Each note value is exactly double the next shorter one. This is a system of proportions, and once you see it as a system the individual values follow automatically.

Five note values to know cold: semibreve (4 beats), minim (2), crotchet (1), quaver (½), semiquaver (¼). That said, the vast majority of music is built from just quavers, crotchets and minims — so you can already do a lot with those three.

In the note-value system, each value lasts how long next to the one below it?
Twice as long — a crotchet equals two quavers, a quaver equals two semiquavers, all the way down.

How quavers and semiquavers are joined

On their own, quavers and semiquavers carry little flags on their stems — one flag for a quaver, two for a semiquaver. When several of them sit next to each other, the flags are replaced by beams: thick lines joining the stems. One beam means quavers; two beams mean semiquavers. The stem — and any beam bridging a group — can sit above or below the note-heads: by convention notes high on the stave take downward stems and lower notes take upward ones, which keeps the stems and beams clear of the lines.

Beaming is not decoration — it is grouping. Notes are joined so that each group adds up to one beat, which lets you read the beats at a glance instead of counting flags. We will come to the exact beaming rules later, in the Time signatures section; for now, just know that a beam shows you where a beat is.

The doubling system in motion

Feel the beat, then subdivide

Feel it: clap the values

Rhythm is understood far faster through the body than through the page. Set a slow, steady beat — tap your foot, or count "1, 2, 3, 4" aloud at walking pace — and clap these patterns against it. Keep the foot-tap perfectly even; it is the ruler everything else is measured against.

One beat at a time

Clap once on every count: clap–clap–clap–clap, one per beat. These are crotchets, one beat each.

Half beats

Now clap twice as fast, two claps per count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, clapping on both the number and the "&". These are quavers, half a beat each. Notice you fit exactly two into each foot-tap.

Holding across beats

Clap on count 1 and hold — no clap on 2 — then clap on 3 and hold through 4. Each clap now lasts two beats: these are minims. Your foot keeps tapping all four beats underneath while your hands move only twice.

Extending and linking note values

The dot: add half again

A dot placed after a note adds half its own value to it. So a dotted crotchet (one beat) gains half a beat, lasting one and a half beats in total. A dotted minim (two beats) gains one beat, lasting three beats. The rule is always the same: dotted = ×1½.

Clap on beat 1 and hold through the “&” of beat 2 (one and a half beats), then clap on the short “&” before beat 3. That long–short lilt is the dotted rhythm — the heartbeat of a great deal of music from nursery rhymes to national anthems.

A rhythm that repeats unchanged is an “ostinato” — Boléro rides the same one for the whole piece (Ravel, public domain). The last is the stadium groove you know from “We Will Rock You” — rhythm only.

The tie: add two values together

A tie is a curved line joining two notes of the same pitch into a single sustained sound. Their values add together: a crotchet tied to a quaver lasts one and a half beats, just like a dotted crotchet.

So why use a tie when a dot would do the same job? Two reasons: ties can cross a bar line (a dot cannot), and ties can span any two values — useful when the combined length does not match a clean dotted-note value or when the beat boundary must remain visible on the page.

Use a dotted note when the combined length fits within a single bar and a dot captures it cleanly. Use a tie when the note must cross a bar line, or when keeping the beat divisions visible in the notation is more important than brevity.

Rhythm patterns — the same beat, eight ways

One bar of 4/4, and every row fills the same four beats with a different rhythm. The mixed rows show how beams spell out each beat: a partial second beam marks the semiquaver inside a dotted pair. The 3 above a group means a triplet — three notes squeezed evenly into the time of two; the 6 means a sextuplet, six in the time of four. Tap ♪ on any rows and play them together — crotchets against triplet quavers is the classic two-against-three feel.

A rhythm is just note values laid against a steady pulse. Count the beat aloud, then fit the pattern on top.

Dividing a beat into three

Triplets: three in the time of two

The doubling system divides beats into equal halves, quarters and eighths. But composers also need to divide a beat into three equal parts. Three notes played in the time of two is a triplet, marked with a bracket and a small 3 above the group.

The most common is the quaver triplet: three quavers squeezed into the time of two (one crotchet beat). Subdivide further and you get the triplet semiquaver — six even notes in a single beat. The feel is a gentle triple subdivision against the underlying duple pulse — the “1-and-a” feel common in blues and ballads.

Two, then three

Hear the two subdivisions one after another. Beats 1 and 2 stay as steady crotchets in both bars. In the first bar, beats 3 and 4 each split into two even quavers; in the second bar, the same beats each split into a triplet of three. Same beat, divided two ways — press play and let it loop.

Time and pitch are independent systems — you already know that from Essentials. This section goes past simple time into the structures that catch players out: compound metre, irregular bars, and fine subdivision.

Triplets

The subdivision system divides beats into equal halves, quarters and eighths. But composers also need to divide a beat into three equal parts. Three notes played in the time of two is a triplet, marked with a bracket and the number 3 above the group.

The most common is the quaver triplet: three quavers in the time of two (one beat). The feel is a gentle triple subdivision against the underlying duple pulse — the “1-and-a” feel common in blues and ballads.

Triplets are the feel behind shuffle rhythms. A straight quaver pair is even; triplet quavers lean long-short at 2:1 rather than 50/50.

Triplets = 3 in the time of 2. Duplets = 2 in the time of 3 (compound time). The bracket and number always tell you the grouping.

Duplets

A duplet is the exact mirror image of a triplet — it does in compound time what a triplet does in simple time:

So in 6/8 or 12/8, where each dotted-crotchet beat is normally three quavers, a duplet (bracket with a 2) splits that beat into just two equal notes instead. It is the opposite manoeuvre to the triplet: where a triplet imports a three-feel into duple time, a duplet imports a two-feel into compound time. They appear in music that shifts momentarily between compound and simple feel.

Compound time — the structural difference

In compound time the beat is a dotted note. In 6/8 the beat is a dotted crotchet (worth three quavers). There are two such beats per bar — not six separate quaver beats. This distinction is genuinely important: a performer conducting 6/8 beats in two; a performer conducting it in six is being pedantic about the subdivision, not the pulse.

The implication for reading: when you see six quavers in a 6/8 bar, you do not read them as six equal beats. You read them as two groups of three, the first quaver of each group landing on the beat.

! The compound classification

Compound duple = 6/8 (two compound beats). Compound triple = 9/8 (three). Compound quadruple = 12/8 (four). The adjective refers to the number of beats; "compound" refers to the triple subdivision of each.

In compound time (6/8, 9/8, 12/8) each beat is a dotted note that divides into three — not two. The beat itself hasn't changed; only how it subdivides.

Irregular groupings

A "triplet" is three notes played in the time of two of the same value — three quavers in the time of two quavers, for example. This temporarily imposes compound subdivision on a simple-time bar. A "duplet" is the reverse: two notes in the time of three, imposing simple subdivision on a compound beat. Both are notated with a number above the group (3 or 2).

Finer divisions: down to demisemiquavers

The doubling system has no floor. Past the quaver, each level halves again: a semiquaver is a quarter of a crotchet (two per quaver), a demisemiquaver halves that again (four per quaver), and a hemidemisemiquaver halves it once more. Each adds one more flag or beam to the stem.

You rarely count these individually. Instead you feel the beat and subdivide it: four semiquavers per crotchet is “1-e-and-a”; demisemiquavers simply double the speed of that grid. The doubling logic from the basic note values runs all the way down — nothing new to memorise, just more halving.

Rests and barlines

Silence is written as deliberately as sound. Every note value has a matching rest of the same length — a crotchet rest, a quaver rest, and so on — telling you exactly how long to stay quiet. A rest is not a gap in the instructions; it is an instruction, with a precise duration.

The vertical barlines divide the music into bars (also called measures), each holding the number of beats the time signature promises. They are the music's regular punctuation, making the pulse visible on the page. A double barline marks the end of a section, and a final barline (thin then thick) marks the end of the piece.

Irregular metres (5/4, 7/8) feel asymmetric because the beat groups are unequal — usually 2+3 or 3+2+2. Count the groupings, not just the total.

Double-dotted notes

A single dot after a note adds half its value. A second dot adds half of that — so in total a double-dotted note is worth its original value plus three-quarters.

  • Double-dotted crotchet = 1 + ½ + ¼ = 1¾ beats
  • Double-dotted minim = 2 + 1 + ½ = 3½ beats
  • Double-dotted quaver = ½ + ¼ + ⅛ = ⅞ of a beat

A double-dotted note is almost always followed by a note short enough to complete the beat — most commonly a semiquaver after a double-dotted crotchet. The effect is a very characteristically uneven, “snapping” rhythm, used a great deal in French Baroque music.

Irregular time signatures: 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 7/8

Simple time divides into 2, 3 or 4 beats; compound time divides those beats into three. Irregular time uses a number of beats that cannot be reduced to a single duple or triple pattern: 5 and 7 are the most common.

5/4 has five crotchet beats per bar. It almost always feels like either 3+2 or 2+3 (never five equal beats). Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five” is in 5/4. 7/4 has seven crotchet beats, typically grouped as 3+2+2, 2+3+2 or 2+2+3. 5/8 and 7/8 work the same way with quaver beats.

Beaming in irregular time follows the group structure: in 5/4 as 3+2, beam quavers in a group of three then a group of two (or vice versa). The groups tell you where the subdivided pulse sits within the bar.

Irregular divisions of simple time

Triplets divide a beat into three in simple time. The same principle extends: any number of notes can be fitted into the space of another number, marked with a bracket and the relevant figure.

  • Duplet (2 in the time of 3) — in compound time, already discussed.
  • Quintuplet (5 in the time of 4 or 3) — five notes squeezed into one beat or two.
  • Sextuplet (6 in the time of 4) — can also be read as two triplets.

The bracket and number tell you the substitution. The notes inside are played as evenly as possible within the stated duration. These are less common than triplets but appear in expressive solo writing where the performer needs a note-count that falls outside the standard subdivisions.

In 6/8 beam in two groups of three quavers. Never beam all six together — that hides the beat structure. The beam is the composer's grammar for showing pulse.

Beaming and note-grouping rules

Beaming (joining quavers and shorter notes with a horizontal bar) must reflect the beat structure of the time signature. The rule of thumb: each beat should be visually clear.

  • In 4/4, do not beam across the half-bar boundary (beat 3). Quavers on beats 1–2 can beam together; quavers on beats 3–4 can beam together; but a beam must not link a note from beat 2 to a note on beat 3.
  • In 3/4, you may beam across the bar freely because all three beats are of equal weight, but a single quaver is usually written with a flag rather than beamed to the next bar.
  • In 6/8, beam in groups of three quavers (one dotted-crotchet beat per group). A beam of six quavers across the whole bar is acceptable; a beam of four quavers straddling the midpoint is not.
  • In irregular time, beam within each sub-group (e.g. in 5/4 grouped as 3+2, three then two).
  • Rests follow the same principle — use rests that fill complete beats or sub-groups, not rests that split a beat in two across a boundary.
